End of the Year Expectations for Eighth Grade
All 8th grade students should create at least 4 art pieces for their portfolios exemplifying all elements of the curriculum. Included in the portfolio should be evidence of the skills (physical and critical thinking), techniques (use of digital hardware and software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Google Drive, etc…), ideas, connections (historical and cultural), acquired through the course instruction.
Students will be able to…
a. use materials that include oil pastels, pencils, colored pencils, erasers, markers, construction paper, drawing paper, computers, public domain websites, computer software, Adobe Photoshop, public domain websites, Google Drive, Google Docs, paints, clay, rulers, mixed media, computers and brushes in a safe and appropriate manner. Other materials may be added to the list.
b. create works with a focal point based upon age appropriate themes using various materials applying the elements (comparing levels of value) and principles of art with an increased knowledge of the principles of arts
c. demonstrate ethical responsibility when using (internet, public domain websites, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge), posting, and sharing (Google Drive, etc.) materials through technology.
d. understand the significance and influence of artworks in various cultures and time periods
e. use age appropriate vocabulary

8th Grade Projects: Students will produce artworks indicating ability to effectively use the Elements of Art and Principles of Design and demonstrate appropriate care of chosen materials that exemplify the techniques taught in class.
Possible Projects to choose from… but not limited to self-portraits (based upon famous artists, exemplifying time periods or movements, using enlarging by grids, choosing materials), Computer Graphics/Digital Art (Surreal Self-Portraits, Propaganda Poster for Current Local or World Problem, Motivational Posters, Packaging Design, Movie Posters, Gaming World, Menus, Website Design, Site Specific Sculptures), Ceramic Sculptures (animals, teapots, candlestick holders, salt and pepper shakers, rain sticks, shakers, totems, udus, story tiles, portraits), 2-Point Perspective (Dream Cities 200 years in the future or 200 years in the past, Surreal Images, Names, Still-Life), Comic Book Covers, Still-Life, Figure Drawing, Zentangles, Radial Symmetry.
Students will create works of art using the following materials and tools by applying the elements and principles of art.
Other media may be used in addition to those listed below.
Students will understand the characteristics of the following materials while skill building as they apply various techniques.
- Digital Art- Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Bridge, Adobe InDesign, Google Drive, Google Docs, Computers, Scanners, Digital Cameras, Public Domain Websites, Editing, Layers, Filters, Tools, Proportions, Menus, Document Work, Share Works
- Graphite and Conte Crayons- values, cross-hatching
- Paints: Watercolors, Acrylics, Tempera- opacity, transparency, glazing, blending, dry brush, wet on wet
- Colored Pencils/Oil Pastels-values, colors, blending, scratch back, cross-hatching
- Clay- raw/Earthenware, plastic, leather hard, bone dry, bisque, slip, scoring, texture, forming (form), glazing, painting
- Mixed media- use of various painting mediums with drawing mediums to produce mixed techniques
Use various mediums to demonstrate particular qualities and effects according to the materials being used.
Create Strategies (thumbnail sketches, pre-drawings, sketches, writing, journal) in order to produce a work. Document process of creating a work, digitally, journal, sketches.
