Regents Earth Science
Course Description:
You are enrolled in a rigorous and demanding course. It is designed to offer you real challenge. Although challenging and demanding, it is not impossible to be successful. For the most of you this will be first science course that you have ever taken with strict and demanding requirements.
During the year you will discover the variety of features of the earth and universe, along with the complete physical phenomena governing them.
Most important is to understand our role as humans in the physical world that supports life.
Course Topics:
Astronomy
Meteorology
Oceanography
Physical Geology (Mineralogy, Lithology, Weathering, Erosion, Plate Tectonics,etc.).
Historical Geology(Paleontology, Rock Records, etc.).
Requirements:
You are scheduled for five classes per week, plus an extra lab class every other day. As a regent’s requirement, you are to complete and verify a minimum of 30 hours of laboratory investigation. Therefore you will need a laboratory folder which you must submit to me for the storage of your lab write ups. It is to be organized neatly and chronologically. Your lab folder is due the first lab. Failure to meet this requirement will exclude you from the Regent’s Exam in June.
Your quarterly grade will be based upon averages of numerous investigations, and assigned readings, Daily reading assignments will be given and it is essential that they are reviewed prior to the next class meeting. Your quarterly grade will be calculated in the following manner: 50% will be derived from unit test scores. 25% will come from assignments. 25% will come from labs. You are expected to come to class on time with all of the necessary required materials. Any behavior that detracts from educational process will not be tolerated. In addition show respect for yourself and others. Be responsible take care of the materials and equipment you use.
