First Grade

Your child's Library report card contains three benchmark skill categories: Information Literacy, Media Literacy (Technology) and the Ability to Use the Library Media Center. These Library benchmark skills are part of the new Empire Information Fluency Continuum and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards.

Information Literacy

  • Recognizes that fiction and picture are organized by the author's last name in A-B-C order.
  • Understands the difference between fiction and nonfiction.
  • Distinguishes between fact and opinion.
  • Find facts and briefly summarizes to answer research questions.
  • Draws a conclusion about the main idea with guidance.
  • Asks, "What do I wonder about now?

Media Literacy (Technology)

  • Navigates electronic resources with guidance to locate information to answer questions posed by teacher.
  • Interprets information in pictures, illustrations, and simple charts to verbalize the main idea.
  • Communicates and shares understanding of a general topic to classmates, families, and others through writing, drawing or oral presentation.

Ability to Use Library Media Center

  • Demonstrates the ability to use the Library to check out and return books on time.
  • Locates fiction and picture books in the Library Media Center.
  • Identifies the main parts of a fiction and picture book.
  • Selects books, poems, or media based on teacher-selected criteria or personal preference appropriate to his/her reading ability.
