Second Grade

Your child's Library report card contains three benchmark skill categories: Information Literacy, Media Literacy (Technology) and the Ability to Use the Library Media Center. These Library benchmark skills are part of the new Empire Information Fluency Continuum and the New York State Common Core Learning Standards.

Information Literacy

  • Recognizes that questions can be answered by finding information.
  • Asks "I Wonder" questions about the research topic.
  • Follows a modeled inquiry process during each visit to the library to do research.
  • Compares new ideas with what was known at the beginning of the inquiry.
  • Recognizes the purpose of the online library catalog to locate materials.

Media Literacy (Technology)

  • Writes, draws, or verbalizes the main idea and supporting details.
  • Presents information in a variety of ways.
  • Searches the online catalog with assistance to locate materials.
  • Uses online library resources and/or databases to locate appropriate information.

Ability to Use Library Media Center

  • Demonstrates the ability to use the library to check out and return
    materials on time.
  • Locates fiction and picture books by author's last name.
  • Locates non-fiction resources by Dewey number in the Library with assistance.
  • Returns materials used in the Library Media Center to the correct place on the shelf.
  • Selects books, poems, or media based on teacher-selected criteria or personal preference appropriate to his/her reading ability
