Welcome to Second Grade!
There's no doubt about it! My students are the GREATEST!
WELCOME TO SECOND GRADE with Mrs. Sloma!
I want to welcome my students and parents to second grade at Westmoreland Road Elementary. I look forward to working with your child and you this school year. This year our classroom theme is "Disney" oriented. Much of the classroom is decorated with several items from Disney movies. Walt Disney World is one of my favorite places to visit.
Disney movies have so many incredible quotes:
"Think happy thoughts", from Peter Pan.
"The only way to get what you want in this world is through hard work", by Princess Tiana from Princess and the Frog.
"Sometimes the right path is not the easist one", by Gradmother Willow in Pochohontas.
"You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem and smarter than you think", by Winnie the Pooh.
"Venture outside your comfort zone. The rewards are worth it.", By Rapunzel from Tangled.
"Believe you can, then you will.", By Mulan.
We do the majority of the classroom assignments together, in schools. However, your child will be assigned to complete work on their REMOTE day that they are home and not in the classroom. Exceptions will be made if your child has been ill for several days. Homework is used to reinforce certain topics that were covered in class that day or the day before.
I am also requesting my students to do the following DAILY at HOME:
1. Have your child read out loud to you at least for fifteen minutes each day. Monitor your child's fluency (the speed they read) as well as their ability to retell the story. If a child makes 5 mistakes while reading a page of a book (has difficulty saying a word) or even struggles to retell what has happened, it is a sign that particular book is too high of a level for them.
2. Practice their math addition and subtraction facts up to 20.
3. Practice their weekly spelling words each day (if spelling words have been assigned for the week or biweekly)
4. Have them go over their weekly reading vocabulary.
If you have any questions throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me at school, Monday through Friday, before school hours 8:00am-8:20am, or after school hours from 3:00pm-3:30pm. My number is 315-266-3440, ext. 0161. You can also contact me through email, at hsloma@wboro.org.
There's a million reasons why I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year! Here's to an awesome school year!
