School Kids at School

    Welcome to Third Grade!

There's no doubt about it! My students are FARM-tastic kids!

WELCOME TO THIRD GRADE with Mrs. Sloma!

I want to welcome my students and parents to third grade at Westmoreland Road Elementary. I look forward to working with your child and you this school year. This year our classroom theme is "farm" oriented. Much of the classroom is decorated with several items you would see in from a farm.  Some of my fondest childhood memories was visting my grandparents and playing with the animals on their farm.  They had a farm on Fox Road in Marcy.

This is my thirteenth year doing a themed classroom. In the past I have had a Dinsey themed classroom, a dog themed classroom, a circus themed classroom, an Adirondack themed classroom, a safari themed classroom, and a minion themed classroom.

We do the majority of the classroom assignments together, in cooperative groups. However, if a child does come home with an assignment not completed, or stamped with the words "homework", they must complete that packet/assignment and turn it back to me the following day. Exceptions will be made if your child has been ill for several days. Homework may be given occasionally per teacher's request to reinforce certain topics that were covered in class that day.

Since I do not assign homework all the time, I do expect the children to work on the following each and every night:

    1. Have your child read out loud to you at least for fifteen minutes each day. Monitor your child's fluency (the speed they read) as well as their ability to retell the story.  If a child makes 5 mistakes while reading a page of a book (has difficulty saying a word) or even struggles to retell what has happened, it is a sign that particular book is too high of a level for them.

     2. Practice their math addition and subtraction facts up to 20.  Also have them practice their multiplication and division facts.

    3. Practice their weekly spelling words each day.

    4.  Have them go over their weekly reading vocabulary.

If you have any questions throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to contact me at school, Monday through Friday, before school hours 8:00am-8:20am, or after school hours from 3:00pm-3:30pm. My number is 315-266-3440, ext. 0161.  You can also contact me through email, at hsloma@wboro.org.  There's a "moo-llion" reasons why I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year!
