National Junior Honor Society
The purpose of National Junior Honor Society, a national organization, is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character and to encourage citizenship.
Students must have a cumulative average of 93.0 or above to be eligible. This is obtained by averaging grades from the last two marking quarters of 6th grade and all four marking quarters of 7th grade. Students are notified about their eligibility in the summer immediately following their 7th grade year. Once notified, they will be requested to complete a form and obtain signatures which verify their school and community service, school activities and out-of-school activities. In addition, a five-member Faculty Council will evaluate the students’ attributes of citizenship and character. It is not permissible to accept students only on merit of academic achievement. According to the National Junior Honor Society handbook, “Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility.”
The annual induction ceremony takes place in October. The Whitesboro chapter has been in existence for more than 30 years.
