Laissez les bons temps rouler!

On February 13, Mrs. Cidzik and Mrs. Kostolecki’s French classes at all levels (grades 9-12) participated in a fun-filled cultural event. With masks in hand and jazz music to set the mood, students took part in the making of crêpes. They filled them with Nutella (a chocolate hazelnut spread), strawberries, bananas and whipped cream, and enjoyed other delicious, traditional Mardi Gras foods. King cake was a popular treat and whoever found the little baby trinket became king for the day!

Mardi Gras, also called Fat Tuesday, is a time of celebration that precedes the season of fasting known as Lent. These celebrations begin on or after the Epiphany on January 6 and end on the Tuesday before Lent, or Mardi Gras. This time period is also referred to as Carnival in many other cultures.

French students read about Mardi Gras and Carnival celebrations around the world and answered questions. Students who answered correctly caught Mardi Gras beads in the traditional colors: purple, gold and green. They also learned about Louisiana French and Creole languages. Students now know the difference between the two as well as the history behind Louisiana’s Francophone culture. This is a day students look forward to each year. Bonne fête!
