2/8/2024 - Seventh Grade Math Secret Agent Day
On February 8, seventh grade students at Whitesboro Middle School participated in a Math Secret Agent Day. This activity took place with the lights off and black lights. One-by-one, students scanned their hands outside of the classroom to see if they would be given security clearance. As they entered the room, students needed to be careful not to trip the laser beams as they walked to their team's table. Mission 1 was to create their ID badge with a secret agent code name.
At each of the group of tables there was a box with three locks on it. After every group finished creating their badges, the competition began. Every group was given four more missions to complete in order to open the locked box. Each of these missions focused on ratios and proportional relationships. After solving Mission 2, students were given a UV flashlight to help them with Mission 3. Mission 3 required the use of these flashlights to decipher a code written in invisible ink. This code led to the location of the first key. The following missions required students to figure out the code to a three-digit and a four-digit lock.
Teams that broke into the locked box were rewarded with a prize inside the box and the quickest team also received an extra prize. This activity was created to help students see that learning math can be fun!
