Notable Programs/Activities
Marcy on the Move
Students in grades 3, 4, and 5 have the chance to participate in an afterschool fitness program called
Marcy on the Move. In the fall, this program offers instruction in track and field events, running,
sportsmanship and teamwork. In the spring, the program is Olympic-themed. Students work
together as a country to score points in Olympic events, such as long jump, discus, hurdles, 500
meter dash and relay races.
Green Team
The Green Team is made up of fifth grade students. At the end of the week, the team collects recyclables from each classroom. In addition, the students educate their kindergarten through fifth grade peers on the proper procedures to recycle items from their lunches. The students learn how to differentiate materials into appropriate bins for recycling.
Peer to Peer Mentoring/Tutoring
Students in grades four and five have the unique opportunity to mentor and/or tutor first and second
grade students, as well as our students with disabilities. The mentors and tutors volunteer to push into the classrooms once or twice per week. The students work on reading, writing and team building skills with their peers. Each trimester, a new round of students and mentors are matched to work together.
Character Education
"What You Do Matters" is a schoolwide initiative guided by the CASEL Social and Emotional
Learning (SEL) framework, which recognizes students for exhibiting positive behaviors aligned to
each of our monthly themes. A "What You Do Matters" bulletin board is located centrally in the
school where student tickets are posted outlining their exceptional behaviors. Students are recognized during morning announcements daily, and at the conclusion of each month, all tickets are sent home with a letter to allow students to share their accomplishments with their families.
