Green Team Tours Recycling Plant in Utica

On March 22, the Whitesboro Middle School Green Team had the opportunity to visit the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority’s recycling plant in Utica.

The Green Team got up close and personal with the plant’s new single-stream system, “RecycleOne, One and Done,” and they learned about the recycling process from beginning to end. For example, they learned about how the recycling gets transformed from a massive mound into sorted bundles that can then be sold and made into new materials. The team also learned about how recycling is beneficial not only for our planet, but for our pockets as well.

This year the Green Team also participated in the Plastic Film Challenge, which was a plastic bag collection competition between 10 local school districts. Over the course of a month, the team helped collect more than 200 pounds of plastic bags to be recycled into new bags and other useful goods. Whitesboro Middle School placed third in the competition.

Thank you to the Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority for letting the Green Team tour your facility!
