Middle School Creek Week
Last week was Creek Week on the Middle School Campus. The seventh graders had a blast and learned a lot. Behind the Parkway School, the Sauquoit Creek served as the science classroom for a day.
Students learned the various biotic and abiotic factors that could affect a stream's health. The classes prepped for the event in learning how to collect data in the creek; pH, temperature, velocity, dissolved oxygen, macroinvertebrates, depth and turbidity were the data points that were measured. The classes spent a day in the creek in waders collecting data. The next day was spent identifying the various macroinvertebrates (mayflies, crayfish, scuds, stoneflies, caddisflies, etc.) under the microscopes. Finally, the classes analyzed the data collected to determine if the Sauquoit Creek was healthy. Our conclusion was that the Sauquoit Creek is indeed a healthy creek!
