Playoff Dates Set for Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball and Hockey Teams

It’s February - - and that means it is playoff time for dozens of area high school sports teams. Fortunately for the Whitesboro community, fans from every corner of Section III will be seeing a lot of blue and white. Whitesboro’s Boys Varsity Basketball team, Girls Varsity Basketball team and Boys Varsity Hockey team all qualified for sectionals. Both the Boys Varsity Basketball team and Girls Varsity Basketball team will be playing their first sectional game at home. Below, you will find a complete rundown of everything that you need to know.

Boys Varsity Basketball - Section III Class A First Round Game:

11- New Hartford @ 6- Whitesboro, Friday, February 20, 7 PM

Preview: The Whitesboro Boys Varsity Basketball team (14-5 overall, 9-3 TVL) will be taking on bitter rival New Hartford (9-10 overall, 4-8 TVL) for the third time this season. The Warriors, who finished the regular season in second place in the TVL, are 2-0 against the Spartans this season. Whitesboro defeated New Hartford at home 64-45 on December 12 and on the road in a double overtime thriller, 77-73 on January 23.

If Whitesboro vs. New Hartford Round III isn’t compelling enough, Whitesboro’s leading scorer, senior T.J. Borza (20.3 points/game), only needs 6 points to reach 1,000 points for his career. Also, Whitesboro will be looking to snap a two game losing skid. The Warriors finished the regular season with losses to Notre Dame (77-63) and Proctor (46-44).

The Whitesboro/New Hartford winner will play at 3- Notre Dame in a quarterfinal game on February 24 at 7 PM.

Girls Varsity Basketball – Section III Class A First Round Game:

14- Fulton @ 3- Whitesboro, Tuesday, February 17, 6 PM

Preview: The Whitesboro Girls Varsity Basketball team enters sectionals on a roll, having won 9 games in a row. The Lady Warriors (14-5 overall, 10-2 TVL), will be taking on Fulton (7-10 overall) for the first time this season.

Senior Maria Lapertosa, who notched her 1,000 career point earlier this season, leads the way for the Lady Warriors, averaging 15.7 points per game.

The Whitesboro/Fulton winner will play either Carthage or Cortland in the quarterfinals on February 20. Location and time TBD.

Boys Varsity Hockey – Section III Division II Quarterfinal Game:

4- Whitesboro @ 1- New Hartford, Friday, February 20, 6:30 PM

Preview: Don’t let Whitesboro’s 6-12-2 overall record fool you. The Warriors, who at 4-8-1 in league play finished the regular season in 4th place in the Division II American, have yet to lose to the Spartans this season. On November 28, the Warriors and Spartans skated to a 2-2 tie in Whitesboro and then on January 19, the Warriors upset the Spartans 4-3 in New Hartford.

Leading the way for the Warriors is senior forward Matt Morreale, who has 6 goals on the season and senior defenseman Tom Giglio, who has 13 assists on the season.

The Whitesboro/New Hartford winner will advance to the semifinals on February 25. Location, time and opponent TBD.

Good luck to all of Whitesboro’s players and coaches who are competing in sectionals! Also, all fans, players and coaches - - remember to display good sportsmanship.
