Girls Varsity Basketball Defeats Fulton, Advances to Next Round
Make it a 10 game winning streak! The red hot Whitesboro Girls Varsity Basketball team is moving onto the second round of sectionals, after defeating Fulton at the Warrior Dome 50-34 on February 17.
The Lady Warriors, who raced out to a 41-17 lead after the third quarter, were again led by senior Maria Lapertosa, who led all scorers with 17 points. Gianna Gotte chipped in 12 points for the Lady Warriors and senior Kristyn Deuel added 8 points. Mallory Clark led Fulton with 12 points.
Whitesboro, now 15-5 overall, will play Carthage in the second round of sectionals on Friday, February 20 at home. Tip-off is scheduled for 5 PM. Carthage (11-9) is coming off a thrilling 46-45 come from behind win over Cortland. Carthage trailed by 13 points at the end of the third quarter.
The girls’ game is the first half of a girls/boys home double header. The 6th seeded Whitesboro Boys Varsity Basketball team (14-5 overall, 9-3 TVL) will take on 11 seed and rival New Hartford (9-10 overall, 4-8 TVL) in a first round sectional playoff game at the Warrior Dome after the girls game is over. It’s the third meeting between the teams this season. So far, the Warriors are a perfect 2-0 against the Spartans. Also, Whitesboro’s leading scorer, senior T.J. Borza, only needs 6 points to reach 1,000 points for his career.
The Whitesboro Varsity Hockey team is also taking on New Hartford on Friday, February 20. The Section III Division II Quarterfinal Game, which is taking place in New Hartford, is scheduled to start at 6:30 PM. So far, the Warriors have yet to lose to the Spartans this season. On November 28, the Warriors and Spartans skated to a 2-2 tie in Whitesboro and then on January 19, the Warriors upset the Spartans 4-3 in New Hartford.
