Whitesboro Hockey Team Upsets Rival New Hartford in Triple OT, Advances in Sectionals
The Whitesboro Varsity Hockey team played rival New Hartford three times this season, and didn’t lose once (two wins and a tie). The biggest victory out of them all came in thrilling fashion on February 20. The underdog Whitesboro Warriors defeated state ranked No. 8 New Hartford 2-1 in triple overtime in a Section III Division II quarterfinal game held in New Hartford.
Whitesboro struck first, when a goal by Sean Gaffney made it 1-0. New Hartford quickly tied it up after Zack Cole fired a shot into the back of the net from long range. The next goal didn’t come until the third overtime, when Whitesboro’s Jacob Hyer won it for the Warriors on a partial breakaway after picking up the loose puck. Whitesboro’s goalie, senior Tim Evans, had an impressive 42 saves for the Warriors. The Spartans outshot the Warriors 43-20.
Whitesboro (7-12-2) advances to the Section III Division II semifinals and will play Christian Brothers Academy-Jamesville Dewitt (CBA-JD) at Onondaga Nation Rink in Nedrow on Wednesday, February 25. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m. Whitesboro and CBA-JD have already played each other twice this season, with CBA-JD coming out on top both times, 3-2 and 4-0.
The Whitesboro/CBA-JD winner will play either Skaneateles or Auburn in the Section III Division II final at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on February 28.
