Third Time's the Charm, Boys Basketball Downs Rival Notre Dame
The Whitesboro Boys Varsity Basketball team couldn’t have picked a better time to arguably play their best game of the season. The Warriors - - and a very balanced scoring attack - - beat the Notre Dame Jugglers 66-57 in a Class A Section III quarterfinal game, in Notre Dame, on February 24.
The win marks the first time Whitesboro beat Notre Dame this season. The Jugglers, who won the regular season TVL title, beat the Warriors 60-47 on January 6 at Whitesboro and 77-63 on February 6 at Notre Dame.
Trailing by one at halftime, a huge third quarter propelled Whitesboro to victory. The Warriors outscored the Jugglers 21-9 in the third, and never looked back. Whitesboro’s balanced scoring attack was led by T.J. Borza (17 points), Josh Gregory (13 points) and Luke Moore (13 points). Jerome Brabham and Joe Sullivan led Notre Dame with 24 and 21 points. As a team, Whitesboro knocked down 10 three-pointers compared to Notre Dame’s 5.
With the win, Whitesboro is now 16-5 on the season and moves onto the Class A Section III semifinals. The Warriors will play Christian Brothers Academy (CBA) on March 1 at Allyn Hall Gymnasium at Onondaga Community College (OCC). Tip-off is scheduled for noon. CBA (17-4) figures to be a tough challenge for the Warriors. The Brothers are coming off a 76-41 win over Oneida - - a team both Whitesboro and CBA played during the regular season. Whitesboro knocked off Oneida twice, 64-42 and 67-49. Both Whitesboro and CBA also defeated Homer during the regular season.
The Whitesboro-CBA winner will play either Carthage or Jamesville-DeWitt in the Class A Section III championship game on March 8 at OCC’s SRC Arena.
