After Stunning New Hartford, Varsity Hockey’s Run Comes to an End
After finishing the regular season at 6-12-2, a lot of people didn’t expect the Whitesboro Boys Varsity Hockey team to make any noise in sectionals. The Warriors clearly weren’t listening. On February 20, the team knocked off rival and state ranked No. 8 New Hartford 2-1 in triple overtime, in New Hartford, in a Section III Division II quarterfinal game. Unfortunately for the Warriors, that’s the only win they would pick up in sectionals this year.
The Warriors hard fought season came to an end on February 25 at the hands of powerhouse Christian Brothers Academy/Jamesville-DeWitt (CBA/JB), 6-1. The Section III Division II semifinal game was played at Onondaga Nation Rink in Nedrow. The Warriors, who finish up the season with a 7-13-2 record, fell behind 3-0 after the first period. CBA/JD added another goal in the second period and two more in the third period. Ryan Suwek scored Whitesboro’s lone goal in the third to make it 6-1. A very impressive six different players scored for CBA/JD.
CBA/JD (17-2-2) will play Skaneateles (19-2-1) for the Section III Division II title on Saturday, February 28 at the Utica Memorial Auditorium. The puck is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m.
Congratulations to the entire Whitesboro Boys Varsity Hockey team and its ten seniors: Brandon DePerno, Dan Emery, Tim Evans, Tom Giglio, Mark Giruzzi, Kyle Henderson, Matt Morreale, Alec Roback, Brenden Sand and Ryan Suwek, on a great season. Best of luck to the boys for next year!
