Girls Varsity Basketball Beats Camden, Advances to Section Final
The Whitesboro Girls Varsity Basketball team is headed to the Class A Section III final for the second year in a row. Despite a slow start, the Lady Warriors defeated the Camden Blue Devils 41-24 in a Class A Section III semifinal game at Onondaga Community College’s (OCC) Allyn Gym on February 28.
Whitesboro trailed Camden 10-7 at the end of the first quarter, but battled back to take a 21-15 halftime lead and never lost the lead again.
Senior Maria Lapertosa led the way for Whitesboro with a game high 15 points. Her sister, Lauren Lapertosa, and Kristyn Deuel each chipped in 7 points for the Lady Warriors. Both Kiersten Leos and Alyssa Curtis scored 7 points for Camden.
With their very impressive 11th win in a row, Whitesboro improves to 17-5 and will play Syracuse rival, Jamesville-DeWitt (17-5), in the Class A Section III final on Saturday, March 7 at OCC’s SRC Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Whitesboro and Jamesville-DeWitt are meeting in the section final for the second year in a row and Whitesboro will be looking for revenge, after losing to Jamesville-DeWitt last year.
Whitesboro, ranked 7th in the state, and Jamesville-DeWitt, ranked 5th in the state, had three common opponents this season. Both teams beat Oneida and Fulton. However, Jamesville-DeWitt beat Oswego twice, while Whitesboro lost to Oswego on the road back on January 10, 56-30.
