VVS Comes From Behind Again, Beats Whitesboro’s Varsity Baseball Team in Sectionals
The Whitesboro Varsity Baseball team played VVS twice during the regular season. Both times, Whitesboro scored first, but VVS clawed its way back to win by a run. On May 28 during a Section III Class A playoff game between the two teams at VVS, the story line was strikingly similar.
After scoring three runs in the top of 1st inning and leading 3-1, Whitesboro lost to VVS 7-3 after giving up six runs in the bottom of the 6th inning.
Ryan McAndrew and Matt Parkinson each batted in a run for Whitesboro and Tyler Gnatek pitched five solid innings, before being pulled in the bottom of the 6th inning. Shortly after, with two outs and the bases loaded, VVS’ Christian Tiffin delivered a bases clearing triple off of Whitesboro reliever Steven Schmidt, extending VVS’ lead to 7-3, where it would stay.
Whitesboro finishes the season with an 11-9 overall record. VVS improves to 18-2 and will play Cortland in a Section III Class A semifinal game on May 30 at Onondaga Community College.
Congratulations to the entire Whitesboro Varsity Baseball team and its eight seniors: Nick Casper, Kevin Flynn, Tom Giglio, Tyler Gnatek, Justin Hoffman, Adam Sardina, Steven Schmidt and Matt Yozzo, on a great season. Best of luck next year!
