Local Fire Departments Teach Elementary Students About Fire Prevention

student and firefighter use fire hose To celebrate Fire Prevention Week during the week of Oct. 6-12, students at each of the elementary schools within the Whitesboro Central School District learned about fire prevention on Friday, Oct. 11.

At Hart’s Hill and Westmoreland Road elementary schools, the Whitesboro, Yorkville and New York Mills fire departments visited the schools and had their apparatus and equipment on display, a smokehouse where students could learn from members of the New York State Office of Fire Prevention and Control and practice their escape, and a performance by firefighters where students learned about things such as how to stop, drop and roll.

A helicopter from Mercy Flight also landed at Westmoreland Road Elementary during the late morning so that students could see the helicopter and learn more about the services that Mercy Flight provides.

At Marcy Elementary School, members of Maynard Fire Department visited students with their apparatus and equipment. Students got to learn about the gear that a firefighter wears, all of the equipment that they would use in the event of a fire or other type of emergency, and they learned more about what to do in the event of a fire.

Students also got to look at the apparatus and equipment on display and practice using a fire hose.

Thank you to all of the local and state agencies that participated in teaching fire prevention to the elementary students in our district!
