An Important Message from the Elementary Principals Regarding our Instructional Program

October 16, 2020

Dear Parents,

We would like to begin by thanking you for your support of our current instructional models. The success that we have experienced is largely due to the commitment of our parents and teachers.  In addition, our students have demonstrated tremendous adaptability throughout this process.

Recently, we received guidance from the New York State Education Department regarding full-remote program expectations. Students are expected to be engaged in teacher-directed instructional activities for approximately five (5) hours per day. This can be accomplished by utilizing synchronous live instruction, recorded lessons and/or independent instructional work/activities assigned. The five hours is inclusive of special area classes such as art, music, physical education and library, which will be part of the daily schedules.

We would like to share our plan for full-remote learning in the event that a closure is necessary and we have to implement a full-remote program. We realize that some children will be at locations other than their homes during the day and may not have the means to access the internet and have accounted for this in our plan’s development. We will also work with students and families who need additional support to meet these requirements.

If a closure is necessary, we will be following a full-day remote schedule for both cohorts A and B. This means that your child will log onto their Chromebook daily with their classroom teacher in the morning, and participate in live instruction using Zoom throughout the school day in addition to independent instructional work/activities. Your child’s schedule will follow their typical schedule as if they were in school, therefore, each student’s schedule will be unique to their teacher, grade level and needs. If the need for a closure arises, your child’s teacher will communicate the daily schedule with you. In addition, all lessons will be recorded and made accessible for those that are unable to attend live sessions or for those who would like additional review or clarification. Please keep in mind that all students will have to log onto their Chromebooks daily and participate in instruction. Students will also be required to submit work using Google Classroom.

We realize this model places tremendous responsibility on our students and families. Part of the process will be monitoring and adjusting as necessary. Be assured, we will support both you and your child(ren) throughout this process should it become necessary to implement a full- remote learning model. Of course, our hope is that this will not occur; however, we want to ensure everyone is aware of what it will look like should the need arise.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or school principal.

Thank you for your continued support. It is very much appreciated.

Sincerely,
