NYSPHSAA Cancels All Winter State Championships, Postpones High-Risk Sports
The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) has cancelled all 2021 Winter State Championships and postponed all high-risk sports, the organization announced on December 11, 2020.
“When examining the feasibility of Winter State Championships, it became apparent that travel and overnight accommodations would create a unique challenge for our member schools,” NYSPHSAA Executive Director Dr. Robert Zayas said in a news release. “At this time, we must prioritize maximizing student participation without a focus on championship events.”
High-risk sports are being postponed until authorization is granted by state officials, and the decision was made due to the increase in infections and hospitalizations throughout the state, according to NYSPHSAA. Sports deemed to be high-risk include: basketball, boys lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball and wrestling.
Low- and moderate-risk sports are still permitted at this time, and the 2021 NYSPHSAA Spring State Championships are still scheduled.
