The increased Child Tax Credit, part of the American Rescue Plan, is now in effect to provide American families with extra relief.
The Child Tax Credit is now $3,000 per child for children ages six to 17, and $3,600 per child for children under the age of six. Beginning July 15, monthly payments of $250 per child over six years old and $300 per child under six years old will be made automatically to those who filed their 2020 or 2019 taxes, or used the IRS Non-Filer Portal to receive stimulus checks.
If families did not file taxes in the last two years but would like to receive the monthly payments for the advance Child Tax Credit, they can use the IRS Non-Filer Portal to enroll.
If families would like to opt out of receiving the monthly checks and claim the Child Tax Credit when filing their taxes at the end of the year, they can un-enroll from the advance payments.
